How do I use the booked management access?

In today’s digital age, it is essential for companies to have efficient and secure management access to their server infrastructure. Management access via technologies such as IPMI (Intelligent Platform Management Interface), iLO (Integrated Lights-Out), or iDRAC (Integrated Dell Remote Access Controller) enables effective remote control and monitoring of servers. This article explains how to use the management access you have booked from us.

What is management access?

Management access provides a separate, dedicated interface for remotely managing server hardware. This interface allows you to perform important functions such as restarting the system, monitoring the hardware, changing BIOS settings, or even installing an operating system remotely, regardless of the operating state of the main OS.

How does management access work?

The management interface of your server receives an IP address from our IPMI IP pool, assigned by our DHCP server. To secure and simplify access, we provide OpenVPN access to this interface. This means you can connect to and manage your server through a secure VPN connection.

Receiving access

After your server is installed, you will receive login credentials and a configuration file for OpenVPN access from us. This information is transmitted securely to ensure the integrity and safety of your server access.

Steps to use management access:

  1. Install OpenVPN: Download and install an OpenVPN client on your local system.

  2. Configure OpenVPN: Use the provided configuration file to set up your OpenVPN client.

  3. Establish a VPN connection: Launch the OpenVPN client, connect, and log in using the credentials provided.

  4. Use the management interface:

    • Web browser access: Enter the IP address of the management interface into your browser and log in using the credentials.
    • Shell alternative: Alternatively, use a shell and the tool ipmitool to access the management interface. This requires command-line input and is another effective way to manage your server.

Important notes:

  • Security: Keep your login credentials and VPN configuration file confidential to ensure server security.
  • Compatibility: Make sure your local system and browser are compatible with the management tools provided by your server.
  • Support: If you have questions or problems regarding management access, our support team is here to help.

Management access is a vital tool for modern server administration. Proper use of this technology can significantly increase the efficiency, security, and availability of your server infrastructure.
