Determining Power Capacity
At FlixHost GmbH, power capacity is measured in volt-amperes (VA). Volt-ampere is the unit of apparent power and is used to measure the combination of active and reactive power in an electrical circuit. The calculation is based on the formula:
VA = Volt (V) x Ampere (A)
This calculation enables us to determine the total electrical load of our servers and equipment.
Power Consumption Monitoring with Non-Calibrated PDUs
In some cases, FlixHost GmbH uses non-calibrated Power Distribution Units (PDUs) to monitor power consumption. This approach was chosen due to the complex regulatory environment in Germany regarding electrical power measurements. In Germany, exact measurement of electric power is subject to strict regulations and standards.
The difficulties in accurately measuring electrical power in Germany can be attributed to various factors, such as the diversity of supply networks and their fluctuations. To still ensure transparent and fair billing for our customers, we often rely on flat-rate models.
Offering Power Flats and Fee Structure for Server Housing
At most of our locations, we conduct an initial power measurement together with our customers to determine actual power demand. Based on this initial measurement, we offer customers the option to book a power flat that matches their individual needs. This allows for simplified billing and budgeting while addressing the complex challenges of power measurement in Germany.
The power flats are based on the measured volt-amperes (VA). For example, a power flat for 150 VA can be booked. If the actual power consumption exceeds the booked capacity, a fee of €5 is charged for each power peak exceeding 50 VA. If the overage exceeds 100 VA, a €10 fee is charged, and so on for each additional 50 VA peak.
We recommend that our customers adjust their booked power flat if consumption regularly exceeds the agreed capacity. This helps to avoid unnecessarily high fees and ensures optimal cost control.
